Checked In To Coffee Brands

Planing on publishing a series of location based activity – comparison graphs grouped by vertical  -  The first one Coffee …looking at check-ins worldwide into Starbucks vs Dunkin’ Donuts locations on Foursquare.

Starbucks is clocking 15k – 20K check-ins a day on Foursquare. They have 17,133 stores in 49 countries (according to Wikipedia).  If you map it against each other it works out roughly to a  one check-in per store per day.

Dunkin’ Donuts check-ins are averaging around 2,000 a day and have 8,800 stores in 31 countries.  (updated data and store count, analysis) -ed

Still a small percentage of both stores total in-store customer base, but significant enough volume and influential demographic to pay attention to.

These are hard brands to compare because of the difference in number of outlets. Living in Colorado my only option of the two brands is Starbucks (Dunkin has only 1 location that is about 3 hours from me). I think in order to compare you need to also have a graph that shows the number of locations of each brand.

Totally agree, I will expand out with a map of actual locations against ones being checked into. You can get so granular with this type of data , it's amazing.

For example… Starbucks US locations Top 6

    rank location check-in count
    CA(20.7%) 247
    NY(11.2%) 134
    FL(6.46%) 77
    TX(4.95%) 59
    IL(4.61%) 55

    Dunkin;

    NY(23.9%) 26
    NJ(11%) 12
    MA(11%) 12
    PA(8.26%) 9
    IL(7.34%) 8
    FL(5.5%) 6

Can you normalize the numbers for amount of stores because the data shown this way is very skewed

We are adding in a 'normalization' option that provides a check-in per store metric
