A new survey by online marketing consultancy Prospectiv, Woburn, Mass., said their social networking experience would be better if marketers pushed more targeted ads.

Social Behavior: Following, Friending, and the Establishment of Credible and Trusted Sources

Social Behavior: Following, Friending, and the Establishment of Credible and Trusted Sources
How following and tracking social behavior allow for more trusted sources to emerge

I was playing around with social network icons the other day, pairing ones that I liked to form word phrases. The one I liked best was the Hype Machine´s
heart (for when you heart a song) and Tumblrr´s follow (the plus sign
followed by the word "follow"). Combined they become "follow your
heart."

When I first started social bookmarking on Delicious I realized that if
you subscribed to someone´s feed you could in some ways follow their
train of thought - viewing their fluctuating interest levels through
what they were viewing and reading over time.

Users can build a loyal set of followers by establishing themselves as
a credible and trusted source of information. These "alpha users" have
strong, well-established profiles on various social networking
platforms, micro-blogging, and bookmarking sites, with loyal followers
that subscribe to their feeds across these outlets.

These followings create networks that are not based on inviting, but
more so a reciprocal relationship between the user and the follower,
based on the user being a trusted source and innovator either online or
off and establishing themselves as someone others are interested in.

Online one's innovator status can be exhibited through their social
network behaviors; what they are bookmarking, how it is being tagged,
how early they identify new information, sites, and trends. With
tags, one's skills are further refined, and in the case of Delicious,
the more thorough a user is at parsing the single most relevant line in
a story, the more quickly that user can evolve into a trusted source
and establish themselves as someone other users look to for the latest
news and innovations.

This following process has enabled a natural selection-like structure
of networked intelligence to emerge that is vastly different from the
friending process of social networks and the associated social
relevancy and importance of users with high friend counts. It is
amazing how much one can see and learn by following the social networks
and the related web-tools utilized by their peers.

A good way for users to gain credibility and increase awareness of
their existence would be for these social networks to free up more
meta-data around the behavior of users. This would allow for
qualification and rankings around which users might be deemed worthy of
following. For example, if I want to follow the top ten users who were
the first to identify and properly tag a certain trend or topic, I
should be able to easily access that information through one aggregate
feed or application.

Unfortunately, at the present moment each bookmarking, micro-blogging,
and social networking site has its own ranking and tagging system,
making it nearly impossible for someone to easily migrate their tags or
networks (of followers or alpha users - the users they are following)
from one site to another.

This is a difficult process as each social network has completely different tools and associated metrics. For example:

- On Flickr, my contacts are those that I follow and their
image-specific skills (how good of a photographer they are) is what
determines my following, and I have ascribed a level of trust to their
image feeds on Tumblr as well.

- On Twitter, much like Delicious there is a natural selection of
signal to noise that determines the follow. The more signal, the better
the follow. The more noise, the less likely I am to follow

- Each of these follows have their own hierarchy of adoption. In my
experience the hardest follow is Delicious, followed by Twitter, then
Flickr, than Tumblr, I could go on.

- Delicious is the hardest because it has taken me over two years and 11,000 +
bookmarks to amass 200 people in my network/follows to my daily
bookmarking. Over the same period at Flickr, where I have published
2,620 photos and received 173,115 views, I have 417 people that call me
a contact or follow my photos.

As we have been building out social features around Trendrr, I am
pleased that we will be generating cool exportable data and tags around
social behavior and impressions that have not been generated before;
essentially allowing new aggregate values to emerge so actionable
intelligence can be properly followed.

I am excited to be following, followed, and creating new tools in this
exciting space. We are just on the tip of understanding the importance
of this movement and I look forward to following the progress and
development of these new metrics and associated values.

Measuring the Social Web

This weeks Advertising Age does a deep dive on
social networks and advertising and marketing with
stories like; What Is Marketers' Biggest Challenge
When It Comes to Social Network

After moderating a panel last week at the Media Summit
conference there is plenty to be discussed. A couple of
takeaways for me was that there is no easy way for
standardization due to the divergent goals of each campaign.

Also of note that there are plenty of emergent behaviors that are
not being measured at all. For example when I polled the panel
on microblogging no saw the value of measuring it yet over 3/4 of
the audience practiced it.

Speaking of measuring social networks and the interweb - If you
have not already check out Trendrr.com and signup for you beta
account now!

Target: Enabling Behavior

Target: Enabling Behavior.

Monday (3/10) a NYT story ("To Aim Ads, Web Is
Keeping Closer Eye on You") dug into behavioral
targeting on major websites and portals
specifically the amount of user generated
data points collected.

For the piece The Times commissioned a study
from audience measurement firm comScore looking
at the amount of data collected around users'
online activities.

"Yahoo came out with the most data
collection points in a month on its own sites
-- about 110 billion collections, or 811 for
the average user. In addition, Yahoo has about
1,700 other opportunities to collect data about the
average person on partner sites like eBay,
where Yahoo sells the ads."

The stunning amount of data collected over a
month was broken out even further on their blog
(How Do They Track You? Let Us Count the Ways)

A portion of the data points collected may
be what is called passive data mining and some,
more egregious data points will be viewed as
problematic form an end-users perspective.

The most important question is -
what data is most actionable?.

What are the most actionable behaviors for
targeting. This may not be the obvious
"top-down" list because factoring in the
psychographics of what people considered
intrusive is important (think Facebook Beacon)
and will yield a better list.

Think video advertising as a metaphor here.
The most obvious way to monetize via advertising
would be total takeovers and long intrusive
advertisements that could not be skipped.

As socialmedia behavior generates even more data,
how can we effectively target but not disrupt?.

The obvious answer for me is to enable or augment
an existing behavior and the experience around it.

The not so obvious part of that equation is
doing it eloquently and effectively.

Bifurcating behavior from content measurement
is another decision tree. When does it make sense
to track the behavior around content?, when does it
make sense just to track the content?.

In our graph below we look at *some* of the
types of social engagement behavior data points.

During which behavior will your message
mean the most in the least disruptive way?

Video View Habits Study

comScore and Media Contacts Study Highlights Behavioral Differences Among Online Video Viewer Segments

Light Online Video Viewers are Heavy TV Viewers

The conventional wisdom says that the heaviest users of the digital channel are likely to be the heaviest consumers of media in general. However, the study found that light online video viewers are actually heavier TV consumers, with 46 percent of this group indicating they watch more than 13 hours of TV per week. By comparison, just 39 percent of moderate video viewers and 30 percent of heavy video viewers watched the same amount of TV

Does Chatter Matter? The Impact of User-Generated Content on Music Sales,

A study conducted by New York University's Stern Business School, Does Chatter Matter? The Impact of User-Generated Content on Music Sales,

findings are as follows:

(a) the volume of blog posts about an album is positively correlated with future sales,

(b) greater increases in an artist’s Myspace friends week over week have a weaker correlation to higher future sales,

(c) traditional factors are still relevant – albums released by major labels and albums with a number of reviews from mainstream sources like Rolling Stone also tended to have higher future sales.

Design update

It is fashion week here in NYC, which means design. We are in
the process of updating our own lookbook and website. Design identity
moves with the fashions or is outcast.

Our programing and design vertical has been doing some amazing
work. I wanted to push in advance to that page and highlight
some of the digital production goodness coming out of wiredset.
Great work from Matt, Emily, Jeff and the whole program and production team.

From Wiredset research lead Sara today... Two recent emarketer articles of note, the first regarding online videos (both professional and user generated).
Also below are some interesting and applicable stats from the article, (the study was from 11/07):

    * 25% of A18-24 said they would watch more movie trailers if available online
    * 10% of A18-24 said they would watch more user generated videos (UGV) if available

Also, another article discussing how media execs feel the growth and advertising opportunities on social networkign sites are overstated.

    * 72% of execs feel that "niche enthusiastic online media" has accurate growth potential while 69% feel that social media networks have overhyped growth potential (versus 27% that think the growth potential is accurate).
    * Also 62% think mobile content has accurate growth potential
    * 47% think UGC has accurate growth potential (Versus 46% who think it's overhyped)
    * 24.5% of marketers used viral web campaigns in campaigns
    * 18.3% of marketers used blogger outreach in campaigns
    * 13.6% of marketers used consumer generated advertising in campaigns
    * 13.3% of marketers created youtue videos in campaigns
    * 16.1% of marketers used social networking (not including straightforward flash/rich media placements on them) in campaigns

Music 2.0

There’s no doubt that the Internet is a fantastic vehicle to promote new music, and the indie-music community has harnessed that power to take market share away from the majors. But issues like DRM, licensing and more remain hurdles. This session examines the potential of social networks, podcasts and even P2P networks.

Day Two Resisting Spock

Lots of Spock invites this last week., good people, premise could be related to reputation, something of real interest to me and yet I can not bring myself to look at it.

I am resolving to abandon social graphs and networks that are not filling a roll on the digital food chain in 08. This stemmed from my social network fatigue syndrome that developed mid year. Although for perspective sake I am probably still in the top two percent of people participating over multiple social networks.

Even the social net web services that aggregate my other social net feeds are growing tired. How many friend feeds and tumblrs does one need?.

I blog this only to mark the time and to see how digital apathy to social networking abates or increases.

The thing is that Spock and other new nets may be and prob will be more valuable then some of the earlier adopted nets. How long will it take for the average person to churn to most valuable network?

What Small Agencies Have to Be Thankful For
from Advertising Age

From this morning / this week's Adv. Age. a nice list put together by Marc Brownstein here are the first few from his list all very true to life in a small agency.

# Opportunity to work with a smart, tight-knit group, who are uniquely talented.

# The ability to say "yes" to new opportunities that are really intriguing.

# Technology. It's transformed the agency business, and allowed small shops to behave as larger ones.

# The ability to say "no" to new business opportunities that are not a fit. And since we are not part of a large, publicly traded holding company, we can do that.

# The chance to make an impact. On our clients' brands. On the careers of our team members. On our families. On our community.

# That we're not lifting heavy objects for a living.

Watching - radiohead.tv

radiohead.tv

"And now for something completely different"

As both the meaning and importance of the live music experience continues to evolve. It was nice to tune into radiohead.tv live
the other night

Things like covering Bjork's - Unravel from her album, Homogenic. Rolling it in on videotape from their rehearsal the night before or covering The Smiths - The Headmaster Ritual. This was Radiohead in the studio on radiohead.tv a NOC broadcasting world wide.

Thoms head in a box a homage to the film 7 not the snl skit. Strong beats and DJ sets playing Fela Kuti to Kings of Leon. Yes there are some clips on youtube and other places but the live broadcast had it's on special nature.

This is so much more innovative than a free download. This is evolution this could be the most exciting trend with music online today.

We can measure the traffic and the long tail of the recording and video later on but there is nothing that can measure the feeling of catching something like this live.

Were you there?, in the worlds new connected living room catching the ephemeral channel that is playing the good stuff? It has it's own unique feeling of shared experience.

A note on Unravel. Bjork played it live in NYC at a RCMH show in October of 2001. A show and song that would define the time, That art would return to our lives and culture would move forward in a city that was unsure it would persevere. Those who were there will never forget it. It is nice to see the songs impact realized by Radiohead

How The Writers Strike Impact Musicians

As daily variety shows like Late Night w/ Conan O'Brien go into repeats. Live shows that are scheduled to air like tomorrows (Tuesdays) Late Night, had musicians Grizzly Bear slated.

As these shows go dim (vs dark) we are left with repeat programing. This does not bide well for current releases that counted on television as a marketing driver (sometimes it is the whole marketing plan) this is not ideal.

The bright side may be that repeats that show performances from releases that never got the chance may get a small boost as word of mouth on good records catchup with day and date release television performances.

Marketing Drivers and Their Impact

This June, Google and Nielsen conducted opening weekend exit polls of more than 2,000 U.S. moviegoers to gauge how online information affected their box-office behavior.

According to the report, TV and the Web hold almost the same amount of sway over potential moviegoers--as 68% of respondents said that TV was influential in their decision to see the film, while 66% said the same about the Internet. In comparison, print (both magazines and newspapers) and radio were markedly less effective, coming in at 44% and 41% respectively, according to Google.

You can use this form to generate a graph of differences in artist popularity between two countries:

The data comes from Audioscrobbler, which produces charts of artist popularity for users who have linked themselves to a particular country.

Mining The Fringe - Micro-Blogging,

I Can Has Realness?

Realizing that micro-blogging might contain the richest sentiment.
The Facebook status updates, twitter and the like seem to convey
unique emotions and words. Sentiment.

Different from SMS, blogging and other messaging and publishing behavior.

More transparent, clear. More likely to convey micro emo moments
and comic allegories of life. Richer more witty. real. revealing.

Tracking life is a business model.

Meet Wiredset's 2007 Summer Interns...

Our intern program is stronger this year than ever. We have seven unique talents with a wide-range of backgrounds and specialties. Wiredset is very fortunate to have these interns for the summer as they provide great perspective and energy to our existing team. They are as follows:

April Ayala- April comes to us from NYU's Stern School of Business where she is pursuing her MBA. She is overseeing WhatsUpNYC (WUNY) and helping us define the strategy for the site and shape its direction moving forward. April is also working on advertising and mobile components for WUNY. She enjoys "learning about the digital and mobile space" and Wiredset's "fun and friendly" team.

Sara Livingston- Sara is a rising senior at The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. She does a great deal of business analytics research for our music and television clients, often using our proprietary data intelligence application, Infofilter. Sara also assists us in business development, identifying new areas for growth and conducting competitive analysis. Sara enjoys Wiredset's "accepting and tolerant environment". "Wiredset's welcoming workplace puts interns at ease and encourages them express their personal views".

Darren Lieberman- Darren is a marketing major at The University of Miami. At Wiredset, he distributes video content to our online partners and researches niche sites for our wide array of media clients. Darren also executes marketing outreach on social networking sites on their behalf. "The great thing about working at Wiredset is being surrounded by a group of fun, knowledgeable, and motivated individuals. I've been exposed to a wide array of artists and bands that I was not familiar with and have discovered websites and online networks that I never knew existed."

Jackie Reynolds-Drumm- Jackie comes to Wiredset from Elon University in North Carolina. Jackie creates profiles across social networks for various Wiredset clients. This includes working on Lenny Kravitz's MySpace page (which Wiredset manages). "I'm very interested in the impact that the internet is having on marketing and public relations. At Wiredset I am able to have a first look at the direction the communications industry is heading in."

Molly Matthieson- Molly also joins Wiredset from The University of Miami. She uploads videos and other media to the websites of several Wiredset clients. Molly also tracks videos for various Wiredset artists across the web. She enjoys Wiredset's "friendly and welcoming" environment and enjoys having a "direct effect" on the company's projects.

Skyler Sourifman- Skyler is a rising junior at Cornell University. This summer, she has serviced various MTV promotional media to our social network partners. Highlights include the shows Short Circuitz and Wild N' Out. Skyler also maintains Wiredset's entities on Facebook. "Working in Wiredset's dynamic atmosphere has kept me up-to-date with the evolving world of the internet. Wiredset has been the perfect internship for me to utilize the communication skills I have and to broaden my knowledge of online marketing. It's been fun to learn in a young and hip environment..."

Zach Timm- Zach comes to us from Ithaca College and is now our head editor for WUNY. He finds the best events in NYC and gets them to our fanbase through postings, emails, and mobile alerts. He has also increased our reader base through content on MySpace and Facebook. Zach enjoys interacting with other "young, energetic employees, which (he) feels (he) can learn a lot from."

Thanks to our summer team for all of their hard work and enthusiasm. If you are interested in Wiredset's fall internship program, please contact Katrina (katrinaa@wiredset.com) to learn more.

Concert Ticket Pricing + Music in Commercials

Nice story on ticket pricing in todays LA Times...

Key numbers for the story,....

The average concert ticket price climbed to $61.58 last year from $25.81 in 1996. Tickets are generally priced based on the acts — and the demographics of their fans. The Cheetah Girls, for example, sold their tickets for an average of $35; Fallout Boy, $27. Seeing Barbra Streisand cost an average of $298.

Music in Commercials...

Love this; ATT :15 second spot with Mates of State doing their track "For The Actor"

To The Edge Of Many Platforms

In distribution today, UMG and ITMS are making more ink than they need to... EMI + Snocap (this is news?).. and on the video front, Xbox LIVE's Marketplace Video-on-Demand service has offered downloads of movies, often in high definition, and download-to-own episodes of television shows for over a half year. No stats yet.

What is crystal clear in this market place is that you have to take it to the edges. It's not enough to just have your own destination, you need to be able to convey your message and experience on others sites and networks. The EMI Snocap deal is only notable in that it provides a store front widget of sorts for bloggers to use.

Furthermore, the competition for discretionary entertainment time and income is super intense. Hell. growing up my dollar had two choices; LPs or movies. Marketers thus need a clear and cool message and content holders must provide an experience which can be conveyed across several platforms. Only by pushing to the edges can the full potential for a project be completely realized.

Tipping Point Electronic Music Distribution

Back in the mid to late 90's there was plenty of talk on how
traditional music retail was dying. It was of course, but has taken longer than many expected to fully disappear.

The growth of digital music sales in the U.S. marketplace,
coupled with the decline in purchases of shiny discs, has
led to an important milestone.

Apple's digital music store, iTunes, is now the third-largest music retailer in the United States with 10 percent market share, overtaking Amazon.com and Target Corp. in units sold.

ITunes had a 9.8% market share , behind Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s 15.8% and Best Buy Co.'s 13.8%, according to NPD Group. Amazon.com had 6.7% and Target 6.6%, (via NPD Group)

----

Also today...

This morning the New York Post's Peter Lauria reported that online music service Qtrax will launch in October of 2007 and has deals with all four major music groups.

This is news? Two words Spiral Frog. There are many companies in

Council of American Survey Research Organizations

Thursday, June 21 2007
The Roosevelt Hotel, New York City

11:15 a.m. – Probing the Blogosphere: Real-Time Tracking of Internet Commerce and Buzz for Marketing Intelligence

This presentation will show how the combination of web monitoring software with traditional and emerging market research tools and techniques can afford market researchers and their clients with increased opportunities for passively acquiring valuable tactical and strategic learning. First, we’ll contextualize the rapid emergence of both e-commerce and blogs. Then we’ll establish the scope of the e-commerce universe and the blogosphere. Finally, we’ll move to present several case studies illustrating the tracking and integration of disparate information to create business insights and marketing intelligence.

Radio, Radio...

Today's News and Links

ITMS launches iTunes Plus: iTunes Updated for DRM Free Music.

Online radio heats up with investments both in the US and UK.
CBS Corp. is buying a popular social-networking website - last.fm - organized around musical tastes for $280 million, combining a traditional broadcast giant with an early leader in online radio. And in the UK - GCap Media to step-up investment in on-line music stations.

GCap Media PLC, the commercial radio company that operates the Capital Radio, Classic FM and XFM stations, is planning to step-up its investment in the online sector of the market in an attempt to rebuild revenues and audience numbers.

The radio quote of the day - or the "Fine, then I am taking my marbles and going home" move - goes to Clear Channel Chief Exec John Hogan who reacts to the chatter about legislation around U.S. radio stations to pay for the right to play music.

"It would make broadcasters really rethink whether they want to be in the music business at all," says Clear Channel Radio Chief Executive John Hogan.

Advertising linkage includes a deeper look by the WSJ on why bud.net, despite earlier suggestions that it might scrap its struggling online entertainment channel, Anheuser-Busch has decided instead to revamp the website to make it edgier.

All this intel and more found every day on our links page.

NYC there's no need to stop

This week in New York has been mental...

Monday - Saw The Stooges again and it was absolutely fantastic. Iggy is just brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. It was tempting to run onstage and do a SXSW Part 2 but we held back and let others enjoy the fun.

Tuesday - Klaxons and Bonde Do Role tore up Bowery Ballroom. Golden Skans even sounds great live...awesome! If you missed them Tuesday you can still catch them Friday at Studio B.

Tonight - Lily Allen at Irving Plaza (The Fillmore...whatever you want to call it) and the YO YO after party. Lily is always a pleasure and now she's added more of her lovely covers to her set. Also, Lily DJing should be a trip. Mixtape #1 and #2 were rad and homegirl has great song selection and some damn good mixing skills

Tomorrow - Kaiser Cheifs at Roseland and Diesel Party at Studio B

Friday - Klaxons and Bonde Do Role again. Gossip after party perhaps?

Saturday - The Gossip at Knitting Factory. As long as Beth Ditto doesn't strip we're in the money. All for girl power and being yourself BUT 99.9% of people don't strip on stage...get the gist?

Sunday - Pass out and sleep all damn day

Till next week!

Team Wiredset Goes Past 14th St

A couple of fine folks from thw Wiredset office decided to make the journey to 175th and Broadway to check out the new United Palace Theater and see Bloc Party and Albert Hammond Jr.

Thoughts? The venue is far but its quite pretty. Note to any future attendees: use the bathroom and drink before as the line for both is long and annoying.

Bloc Party can do no wrong and by the end of the Saturday night gig the band managed to have a massive crowd in front of the stage jumping and dancing in a seated venue. Solid set that ended with the crowd going mental to "Helicopter".

Albert Hammond Jr sounds like Julien Casablancas...too many Strokes shows influencing him is the educated guess. Still, great record and good live performance from the Stroke with the 2nd best hair.

Deeper Look at Todays Links

Notes from todays daily links...

The top 10 real tones for '06 as announced by mobile distribution service 9-Squared ere all hip hop / urban tracks.

Lots of campus music chatter including renewed copyright efforts by
the RIAA which yielded a list of top infringing schools. Label reps
are now more focused at tapping personnel from the same sector with
internship and talent searches. Schools that llegally download the most music include University of Tennessee, Ohio and Purdue universities, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and the University of South Carolina.

Nice paper on line by IBM - Navigating the media divide

Although traditional media revenues still dwarf those of new media, the latter category is expected to grow much faster--20% compared to 6% for old media from 2006 to 2010.

Other reports include taking sides on who will win the bandwidth wars.
... The phone companies, with all their DSL and fiber lines combined, may eventually grab 47.5% of U.S. households while cable grabs 52.5%. But as cable starts to lure away subscribers who aren’t near a fiber line, cable’s share rises to 64%

Other market place predictions surfaced in our link blog included this
report - Annual consumer spending on Internet downloads of movies and TV shows will top $4 billion in 2011, up from just $111 million last year, according to a study released on Wednesday by Adams Media Research.

Snapshots in time

memories of this last few days...

Executing three entertainment focus groups on two coasts in
24 hour period.

Sitting in our conference room with music legend Tony Wilson while wiseass staff played the worst hits of the 80s. The meeting stopped when Olivia Newton John's "Physical" came on with a giant WTF. 20 + years of my indie cred down the drain 8^)

Watching the growth of the team here as we develop and
execute new and interesting strategies and technology
for an exciting time.

Seeing and talking with Tony dug up old NMS (new music seminar)
memories and that could only lead you to the much missed
Howie.
